MISSION STATEMENT
| The
VCU exists to develop for the Christian church and its
related ministries qualified leaders who possess a foundational
knowledge of the Scriptures and a biblical world and life
view. Its programs emphasize biblical studies complemented
by general and professional education and field experience.
Its educational climate fosters development of intellectual
and spiritual maturity, leadership potential and a sense
of world mission.

The VCU purpose is to
provide a program of study and an environment in which students
may acquire a knowledge of the Scriptures, the liberal arts,
and professional theory; develop a biblical world and life
view; and establish patterns for continuing intellectual
development.
Student field work is an integral part of the learning experience.
Each student is expected to engage regularly in Christian
work under the direction of the department of practical
theology. |
1.
Spiritual understanding and growth. To
nurture in students the desire for a proper relationship and commitment
to Jesus Christ. This involves a knowledge of God's Word, God's
will, spiritual discipline, obedience, and a willingness to share
the message of Christ with the world.
2.
Knowledge of Bible doctrine and truth.
To assist students in the acquisition of a thorough knowledge
of the Bible and its systematized teaching. This develops in the
students a comprehensive philosophy of life and provides them
with the content of the Bible for their vocation ministry.
3.
Scholastic excellence. To promote in students
the importance of intellectual discipline and attainment through
a growing comprehension of truth. This involves a mastery of problem-solving
techniques, research methodology, and way of expressing ideas
clearly, logically, and conclusively.
4. Proficiency in biblical languages.
To prepare students to exegete, interpret, and expound the Old
and New Testaments through a knowledge of Hebrew and Greek. This
is accomplished through the course requirements in these languages.
5.
Competency in vocational ministry. To
prepare students to assume professional roles in the mission of
the Christian Church. This is accomplished through ministry courses
and through the Pastoral Internship program.

Involvement in Christian Service. To encourage
students to use their training through field education to reach
others for Christ while attending seminary. This is accomplished
through Christian service and official service days. VCU seeks
to fulfill its purpose primarily by preparing students for pastoral
ministry in accordance with the standards of the Scripture.
VCU seeks to fulfill its purpose by providing a variety of lifelong leaning opportunities for individuals and church, including adult continuing education classes, seminars, publications and media resources, as well as by providing theological leadership for the Christian community and world for glory of? triune God.
In fulfilling this purpose, VCU seeks to develop the following competencies in its graduates. We believe that each of these competencies is intimately and necessarily related to others. Effective ministry requires spiritually sensitive application and integration of all of these competencies.

Grace: Understands and is personally committed to the Gospel of grace as understood in our standards.
Lifestyle: Exhibits spiritual maturity and Christ-like character growing our of the love of Christ.
Servanthood: Demonstrates a heart to serve triune God and others in one's family, church, and world.
TO INTERPRET AND COMMUNICATE? GOD'S WORD....
Knowledge: Understands and clearly explains key biblical and theological facts and concepts in historical perspective.
Theological skills: Demonstrates ability to interpret and thoughtfully apply the Bible) in the original languages where appropriate) to issues of doctrine, life, and ministry.
Conviction: Holds and articulates a coherent Christian theology and worldview informed by our doctrinal standards, and interacts critically and respectfully with other approaches.
Communication: Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
AND TO LEAD GOD'S PEOPLE....
Relational skills: Relates to others with evident respect, sensitivity, and concern to serve, even when there are differences of culture, belief, or values.
Leadership: Leaders others in walking with God in accordance with gifts and callings(e.g., preaching, teaching, counseling, evangelizing, mercy ministry) - modeling Christ's courage, love and humility.
Christ's Lordship: Seeks to bring Christ's lordship to bear in all areas of life and culture-individual and corporate, private and public.
Vision: Seeks to advance the cause of Christ among diverse peoples and cultures within North America and throughout the world for glory of triune God
