2. THE OBJECTIVE OF ESL - top

English as a Second Language is to provide comprehensive English skills for non-native English speakers to acquire fluency in communication in English. By doing so, the students will learn the English language they need at job sites as well as the cultural and social aspects of the United States.

The ESL(English as a Second Language) program at VCU strives to equip adult learners for professional and personal well being in the United States by providing comprehensive ESL instruction to adult speakers of other languages. The VCU promotes the integration of cultural awareness with the practical application of linguistic knowledge throughout its programs. The quality of instruction and relevancy of materials to learners¡¯lives is of utmost importance.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program has assisted thousands of students by teaching them the English language skills necessary for finding work in North America. Our ESL program begins very simply for true beginners, and then gradually progresses to a more advanced level. The curriculum covers basic conversational English, reading, writing, measurements, time and more. Successful completion of this practical ESL program can greatly enhance your confidence and your career opportunities.

Specifically, VCU¡¯s Intensive English Program (ESL) aims to achieve a high level of English proficiency in these four areas:

(1) Fundamental English language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing,
(2) Regular academic activities such as reading and using academic literature and writing college-level essays,
(3) Communicative skills necessary for everyday situations,
(4) Communicative competence necessary for professional activities such as presentation, meetings, and consultation.


3. CHARACTERISTIC OF ESL - top

The Intensive English Program is a full-time, two year-round study program that may consist of one to four 16-week sessions depending on the particular needs of the student. The main features of our program are:

(1) Small Classes: All classes are limited to 10 or 12 students so that students not only get actively involved in the class but also get more attention from the instructor.
(2) four Levels of English Proficiency: The program consists of four or five levels (beginning through high-advanced) for the exact placement of each student according to his/her English ability.
(3) Balanced and Integrated Curriculum: Curriculum combines core courses in four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing in every level with different difficulty and diverse elective courses appropriate to each level.
(4) Qualified and Experienced Faculty: All instructors have at least a B.A. degree or M.A. degree with a TESOL certificate and, are dedicated to teaching.
(5) Communicative Approach: All classes are taught with an emphasis on communication through a variety of interactive, communicative activities to help students develop communicative competence.
(6) Top-Notch Facilities and Student Services: Students can use school facilities such as library, computer lab, studio, and auditorium, and also have a variety of student services such as student chapel and academic advising.
(7) Great Value: Students have a total of 18 hours of intensive instruction every week for a budget-friendly cost.

How to Apply.....
If you have completed a secondary school education or its equivalent and are at least 16 years old, you are ready to apply. Please call the office at (703) 250-8711.

Prepare the following.....
(1) Application form which you must sign.
(2) An official transcript and a statement of graduation of the last school attended. (3) A $200.00 nonrefundable application fee
(check or money order in U.S. dollars made payable to VCU).


5. PROGRAM SCHEDULE (COURSE) - top

The VCU ESL program offers extensive preparation in conversational English such as Comprehension, Reading, Writing and Pronunciation. The program is offered in three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced class along with, TOFEL class (Proficient course) in preparing students for other major colleges and universities in the United States.

With one of the largest international student populations of any American university, Virginia Christian University is the embodiment of the diversity that characterizes the United States. Reading and writing are important skills, but we begin the ESL program with emphasis on listening and speaking . The main focus of the program is developing your ability to use English in your everyday personal and workplace situations.

1. Basic Beginner Course.....The course is designed for the students who are living in the United States and wanting to overcome the language barrier. The Instruction will be conducted using lifestyle method of English which will train student to think and speak like ordinary Americans. The lessons involve the cultural adaptation as well as social assimilation. Writing is a form of expression and communication. When you write well, others can understand what you are saying. You will learn to use the writing process to your advantage.

2. Intermediate and Advanced Course....The course is designed for the students who are planning pursuing higher education through the major colleges and universities in the United States. The study curriculum will be focused on the preparation of the students in developing writing (grammar), speaking (pronunciation) and comprehension (listening) aspect of English. In this setting, TOFEL preparation class will be available for the students.

3. English Language Proficiency.... If English is not your first language, or if English is not the primary language spoken in your home, you must submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The following are minimum score requirements on the different types of TOEFL exams:
A Class: English Writing Skill (2.:00 pm - 3:30 pm)
B Class: English Speaking (3.:40 pm - 5:10 pm)
C Class: English Reading Training(2.:00 pm - 3:30 pm)
D Class: English Listening Training(3.:40 pm - 5:10 pm)


6. FINANCIAL INFORMATION - top

1. Reasonable Financial Policy......The VCU strives to maintain a fair and reasonable financial policy that meets the needs of both the institution and the students. This policy is expected to be observed according to the biblical standards of ethics. The funds are usually generated from the tuition, gifts and also contributions from students, alumni, friends, and churches.

2. Methods of Payment.....Students may fulfill their financial obligations to the school as followed:

(1) Students has an option to pay the full tuition amount at the time of registration or the qualified students could pay the tuition in three installments with the first payment being at least the 50% of the total tuition bill which is due on the registration.
(2) The second payment must be received by the end of the following month.
(3) The third payment must be received by no later than 30 days from the second payment. The installment payment method requires submitting three checks at the time of enrollment. The endorsed checks will be deposited as scheduled by the school.


Students may pay by cash, check, money order or credit cards. Students making monthly payments pay interest monthly at the rate of five percent (5%) on the unpaid balance. Adjustments needed on payment schedule will be made on final payment. Enrollees initially pay an enrollment fee: ESL Tuition is $1.500.00 per semester include Admission fee(New Enrollment only).
